Antique Silver Sugar Tongs Bateman
I often wonder at the fascination and price that some people are prepared to pay for antique silver bearing the Bateman family name. There seems to be some sort of magic aura that commands such high prices at auction. The Bateman silver family started with John Bateman who died in 1760 leaving all his estate to his wife Hester Bateman. At the age of 52 Hester Hester inherited her husband business. Hesters own mark was first registered in London in 1761. Hester had two sons, Peter and Jonathan both of whom followed their father into silver making. Jonathan had a wife called Ann. Jonathan died in 1790 and Ann carried on in partnership with Peter her brother in law. She was later joined by a son William. William later had his own son who also became his apprentice who carried on the trade until about 1840.
