Vinaigrettes were developed from the late 1700's from the Pomander. Originally a Pomander was an orange filled with cloves and held in the hand to produce an aroma which was thought to protect you from the plaque.

The vinaigrette developed this concept into a silver hinged box, with a pierced grill covering a small sponge which was soaked in perfume, aromatic salts or vinegar depending on its intended use. Thus equipped you were able to deal with the foul odours of the street with its open drains or of a fainting fit from someone with a weak constitution.

Like all practicle silver items it has evolved from a plain utility box into a very delicate and highly ornate item. They come in many shapes and sizes and price varies depending on the condition and decoration. They are extremely collectable and despite their small size always command a high price.
