When Tea drinking became fashionable in the early 1700's it was initially the preserve of the wealthy. Tea was imported into Britain in large chests and was sold "loose" to the public.

This created the need for a container for the home to store the tea. With its high value and rare nature it was necessary to protect it from staff theft. Early Tea Caddies were often therefore made with locks to keep the contents safe.

As Tea become more readily available it started to find its way into many more homes. Early caddies often had caps for measuring out the tea prior to the use of the caddy spoon. In the Victorian era it was popular to fit small caddy spoons inside the lid of the caddy.

As caddies became more popular the designs varied from the plain oval caddy to large Rococo style caddies which were large and highly decorative.

Tea caddies remain sought after by collectors today.
