Sugar casters were named as they were used to "cast" the sugar content over food. Early Casters were made in sets of 3. Two small casters for salt and pepper and a larger caster for sugar.

Casters are usually cylindrical in shape. They have a body seperate to the caster head. These heads have perforated decoration to allow the sugar to flow. Sought after shapes are the traditional "Lighthouse" design as well as examples by quality manufacturers such as Liberty and Garrards.

They are very collectable and sought after today.
