Before drinking tea became popular sugar was stored in a box and was used to sweeten alcoholic drinks such as punch. The introduction of tea drinking brought this ordinary sweetner front stage and hence the demand to display it properly.
Sugar bowls and baskets became crafted in Silver and needed to be as elegant and decorative as they silver items it would be used alongside. Early sugar bowls were often plain with lift off covers but soon developed into vase shaped urns and highly decorative sugar baskets.
These baskets, sometimes boat shaped had swing handles and came with or without liners. Liners were necessary with highly decorative pierced sided baskets to prevent loss of contents.
Today there are a large variety available, from novelty designs such as coal scuttles to the traditional swing handled sugar basket. All are very useable and highly collectable.
