Spoons have been in use since before the Roman era. Spoons are the most commonly collected item of Antique Silver. Wealth and status were often marked by the quality of ones spoons, hence the phrase of "Being born with a silver spoon in your mouth"
Spoons along with the knife and fork are commonly referred to as "Flatware" There are a number of different styles that have developed over the years and the most common are listed below.
Old English Pattern

This pattern evolved from the simple Hanoverian Pattern around the mid 1700's.
Fiddle Pattern
Easy to see how this pattern was named after the shape of a "Fiddle" or Violin Case and became popular around the 1820's onwards.
Kings Pattern

Much more elaborate with Shell and Anthemion motifs and evolved around 1790 onwards
Queens Pattern

Easy to mistake with Kings pattern this design is clarly more elaborate and introduced around the 1820's onwards
Beaded Pattern

A continuos beaded border around the item became popular during Queen Victoria reign.
