Salt has been used by humans since at least the time of the Egyptians where it has been found in tombs as funeral offerings. Prior to refrigeration salt has been used as the most common food preservative. Its most common use has been in food flavouring.
Salt is very corrosive on Silver especially if allowed to get damp. Later salts will be found with glass liners which seperated the salt contents from the silver to avoid this corrosion.
Early Salts are very collectable especially if well looked after with no signs of corrosion.
Designs can vary from the plain to the most lavish and these command a high price.
