Introduced from France around the 1800's they were originally used to identify the napkins of a household between weekly wash days. Napkin rings were bought as single items engraved with the name or initials of the owner, but were often given as christening presents. It was also common to give pairs of napkin rings as wedding gifts.
Napkin rings come in many shapes and sizes and plain decoration to the most elaborate. They remain a useful table dressing today and are very collectable.
