Over hundreds of years drinking vessels have changed very little in shape. The earliest drinking vessels were mainly beakers, that is a drinking vessel without a handle stem or foot.

Tankards which were developed around the mid 1500's more usually had handles and hinged covers.

Goblets again from the mid 1500's are usually shaped with a bowl on a stem.

Mugs which have one handle and have no lid date from the mid 1600's.

From these very simple beginnings drinking vessels developed and materials of manufactured varied. Silver drinking vessels developed over the centuries into often elaborate and highly decorated items particularly during the Victorian period.  The Victorians were very keen on giving Christening Mugs as presents to the new born child and often came in cased sets with other items such as spoons and forks.

Because of their every day practical use Beakers,Tankards,Goblets and Mugs of every description are highly collectable and sought after today.
