Food was generally eaten with a spoon until the mid 16th Century. It was about this time in Europe that the humble fork first established itself. It was not until Charles II brought the fashion back from Europe that the fork became a part of our eating culture.
Forks along with the knife and spoon are commonly referred to as "Flatware" There are a number of different styles that have developed over the years and the most common are listed below.
Old English Pattern
This pattern evolved from the simple Hanoverian Pattern around the mid 1700's.
Fiddle Pattern
Easy to see how this pattern was named after the shape of a "Fiddle" or Violin Case and became popular around the 1820's onwards.
Kings Pattern
Much more elaborate with Shell and Anthemion motifs and evolved around 1790 onwards
Queens Pattern
Easy to mistake with Kings pattern this design is clarly more elaborate and introduced around the 1820's onwards
Beaded Pattern
A continuos beaded border around the item became popular during Queen Victoria reign.
