Towards the end of the 19th Century Cigarette and Cigar smoking became increasingly popular. Storage of these consumables quickly took the form of boxes or carrying cases. The larger boxes were for storage at home whilst smaller cases were necessary to be carried on the person.
Early cases are often smaller than todays versions as the first cigarettes were made without filters.Shapes do vary as does the amount of decoration added to the item. Many expensive cases are enamelled often featuring country scenes or animals. Russian cases often have a niello decoration.
Cigar cases can come in the form of a single cigar case.
Despite the decline in popularity in smoking these cases are still sought after by collectors.
