Antique Silver Candlesticks remain very popular with collectors. Originally Candlesticks were a necessity to illuminate rooms in the house whereas today they can make a spectacular decoration and still perform their priamary function by lighting the dinner table to impress friends and guests alike.

From humble beginings as utility ware they have developed over the centuries. Early candlesticks were made from thin sheets of metal and were very light and needed a weighted base. In the late 17th Century a new technique of casting silver became popular and some impressive solid silver candlesticks survive from this period.

By the late 1700's mechanisation meant greater numbers could be produced out of rolled sheet silver and made with a weighted or "loaded" base. With these techniques large number were produced in the cities of Sheffield and Birmingham. Thse production methods reduced costs and silver candlesticks became more widely available. Once the preserve of the "upper Classes" these sticks were now accessable to a wider audience.

While candlesticks were used in rooms a smaller more portable method was necessary to light the way to the bed chamber and thus "Chambersticks" were devised. These much smaller sticks had large drip trays to catch the melting wax as the flame flickered as you walked with it in your hand.
